HistoryFounded in 1887, the City of Rockledge is the oldest incorporated municipality in Brevard County. The first golf course in the area was Rockledge Country Club. Originally named The Golf Club, its celebrated history began in the boom times of the 1920s. Throughout the years, Rockledge Country Club has hosted a round or two of golf to numerous visitors, including former President and Mrs. Warren Harding, who played golf at the club during their stay in Rockledge during the 1920s. Former members during recall dances that were held every Saturday night, followed by a $1.50 dinner affair. Popular big bands like Shep Fields, Bob Crosby, and Hal McIntyre, traveling up from Miami through the area, scheduled impromptu gigs at the club – often just the day before their arrival. Throughout the years, the club changed hands, changed locations, expanded and took on numerous names, including Poinsett Country Club, Rockledge Golf and Country Club, Cocoa/Rockledge Country Club, and The Country Club of Brevard. With each improvement, change in ownership and expansion, what is now known as Rockledge Country Club has etched its way into the landscape of local history. Then, like now, families, individuals and crowds gathered at the club for entertainment, with the same steadfast camaraderie that has fueled the club for nearly a century. |
